Duration is not a quality or price ranking. A shorter route can require more costly remote vehicles, special operating arrangements, scarce rooms or private service days, while a longer urban route can be operationally simpler when services are shared within one base.

Break the quote into six cost blocks

A trustworthy quote does not have to reveal a supplier's confidential net rate, but it should be specific enough to prevent category surprises. 'Transportation included' is too vague if you cannot tell whether it covers airport pickup, train tickets, private vehicles, tolls and late-night transfers.

How the city mix changes the budget

Beijing and Shanghai

Major gateway cities can add high-demand hotel nights, longer airport transfers and timed headline attractions. They can also reduce intercity friction because international flights and fast rail connections are plentiful. The correct comparison is door-to-door cost and time, not only the room rate.

Xi'an, Zhengzhou, Dengfeng and Luoyang

A compact Xi'an base can control hotel changes, while Mount Hua adds a distinct transfer and mountain operating day. A Henan circuit uses several locations and more guided context, so vehicle days and workshops can outweigh the apparent saving of staying outside a coastal gateway.

Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou

These cities are relatively close, but changing hotels three times still adds luggage handling, station transfers and guide/vehicle handoffs. Decide whether one base with day trips or a moving route gives better total value for the activities you actually want.

Guangzhou, Foshan and Kaiping

Guangzhou and Foshan can share a regional base in some plans. Kaiping heritage sites are more dispersed, so a private vehicle may add real value even when public transport looks cheaper on a map. Seasonal heat and family pacing can also change the useful number of service hours.

Chongqing, Zhangjiajie, Tibet and Xinjiang

Mountain and remote-region routes need more than a cheap hotel search. Long ground distances, scenic-area access, weather buffers, vehicle suitability and region-specific operational requirements can dominate the quote. Ask which contingency is already priced and which change would trigger a new cost.

Hotel budget: compare rooms, not stars alone

A 'four-star' label is not a complete specification. Ask for the exact hotel or a short approved list, room size/type, breakfast, number of rooms, single supplement, extra-bed policy, passport check-in confirmation and cancellation terms. Official government guidance says foreign travelers check in with the original passport and should confirm whether a hotel accepts their foreign card; current property practice still needs checking.

Transport budget: price the complete movement

For each intercity leg, compare the train or flight fare plus both station/airport transfers, baggage rules, realistic check-in/security time and the value of a lost half-day. For local days, compare taxis or public transport with a private vehicle based on group size, accessibility, luggage and how scattered the stops are.

A private vehicle is often wasteful for a simple central-city walking day and valuable for Kaiping villages, mountain approaches, airport arrivals with children or a sequence of sites far from stations. Ask whether the driver waits, whether guide and driver are separate, and when overtime begins.

A quote-comparison worksheet

1. Put every night in a row with city, hotel, room type, rooms and cancellation rule.
2. Put every intercity segment in a row with station/airport, class, travelers and included baggage.
3. Mark each day as guided, vehicle-supported, both or independent.
4. List every named admission, workshop and meal; move anything unclear into an exclusions list.
5. Add international flights, insurance, personal spending, optional shows, guide/driver gratuities if applicable, and a contingency reserve outside the operator quote.
6. Compare two proposals only after they use the same dates, occupancy, inclusions and currency.

We did not fabricate a city-by-city supplier allocation because the public catalog does not contain one. No live hotel hold, rail order, flight reservation or supplier reconfirmation was made for a hypothetical traveler.
